I am presently trying to track down the who, what, when, and where of this photo I received after my father died in December of 2004. I assume the couple photographed are my paternal, great grandparents but am waiting for confirmation from family. So far, I’m fairly confident of a few things.
The photo was taken by Simon & Murnane at 227 East Market Street, York, PA. You can barely see the name and studio address embossed in the lower right but it’s there. A Google search for the physical address brought me to this Flickr photostream. So I kept digging.
The photo was taken in or around 1911. It would seem Simon & Murnane weren’t just your every day photographers and have been cited in several art books and the Library of Congress. I found this bibliography which brought me to 1911.
Now to find out who they are! Stay tuned.
This is what the photo looked like before I cleaned it up in Photoshop. Click it to view a larger version.
Here’s another link to a, kinda, creepy portrait of two girls by Simon & Murnane. I dig it.
